How to Use
Twitter
In his email dated 29th May 2009, Toon Chooi wrote as follows
(unedited):
If you’ve spent any time on the Internet then you’ve probably
heard about Twitter. It’s a cool social networking site that’s
all about leaving little blog entries – called Tweets - about
what you’re doing at any given moment. This is a cool tool for
social reasons but it’s also a valuable tool for marketing. Here
are a few tips for how to use Twitter and a brief overview of
what it’s all about.
Over the last several months Twitter has become all the rage.
Stars, sports teams, athletes, companies, and just about
everyone else is using Twitter. All you have to do is go to
Twitter.com and take a few minutes to sign-up on the site. Once
you’re signed up then you’ll have your own page where you can
write your own Tweets and receive any Tweets that are made by
your friends.
Obviously this is fun for social purposes. You can keep up with
what your friends are doing every minute of the day if they
Tweet that much. But Twitter is also very valuable for Internet
Marketing.
There is a spot on the page where you can put a link to a
website. Ideally you would put a link to your website there and
then people would see your Tweets, visit your Twitter page, and
then click through to your site. Obviously it isn’t this easy.
So how do you use Twitter to your benefit?
Well, the first step is getting people to follow you. You can do
this by following them first. Most people will follow you back
when you follow them. You can find people to follow by using a
cool little tool found at
twellow.com.
You can go there and put in a keyword or phrase and find people
who use that phrase on their own Twitter page. So, if you’re in
the Internet Marketing niche then you would type “Internet
Marketing” into the search box.
Don’t follow too many people at once. Just pick about 25 people
a day each and every day. You can find more people by looking at
the followers of people you’re following and then following
them. As you follow more people, and people follow you back,
you’ll get even more followers. It’s like a snowball rolling
down a hill.
You should start writing Tweets immediately and you should try
to post at least 5 every day. You can post links to new articles
and blog posts you made. But more than anything just Tweet about
what you’re doing. Give people something they’ll find
interesting. Then they’ll start looking for your Tweets and
eventually you’ll get people clicking through to your site.
Do not SPAM people on Twitter. There’s no quicker way for people
to stop following you. And you’ll get banned by Twitter if you
do it too much. Just use the site as it was meant to be used –
to connect socially with people. If you do a good job, people
will look into you and your products and you’ll get customers
without even directly selling to them on Twitter.
That is a brief look at how to use Twitter. It really is a great
little tool and every Internet Marketer should be using it. This
means you should start using it right away.
