Do You Have An Evil Twin?

Computers No Comments »

What you don’t know can hurt you. Next time you connect to one of them, be very observant you’re connecting to a legitimate one and not an evil twin.

What is an evil twin?
They are fake Internet gateways posing as a legitimate wifi hotspots. Supposing you visit the local Internet cafe who has a paid hotspot. You boot up your notebook computer, your wifi connection software seeks out available networks and gives you an option of two (maybe more) networks you can get online with. One of them is from the Internet cafe, but wait. You see one that says “Free Wifi courtesy of Wifi Hotspots Nation” or whatever. Everyone loves a deal, who do you get on with? If you chose the one from Wifi Hotspots Nation, then you may have connected to the Internet on the Evil Twin’s network. Note Wifi Hotspots Nation is a fictitious name I created but that is the irony. An evil twin usually operates using a fictitious or deceptive name that’s always changing. Since there is no authority governing the names of wifi hotspots, there is nowhere you go to check up on their legitimacy.

Wifi hotspots networks are like doors. In one place (hotspot) you can have many doors. Through one door, you can enter a solid brick room and do what you like since no one is watching you. Through another, you enter into a room with a two-way mirror where someone is watching and recording your activity quietly without you knowing. Both doors are marked in a way you think you’re going to the same place but in reality you’re not. One of them is really an evil twin; A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Enough about doors and sheep, what does this mean to you? I think you’re smart enough to figure it out by now. By connecting to the evil twin, it’s easy for the people running it to capture any information you’re entering onto websites or even snoop around in your computer and private files. And while they’re there, why not drop some kind of malicious software that’ll run in the background you’ll never even know was there. Who knows that they do.

Aren’t these fake wifi hotspots easy to detect?
If you’re the owner of the legitimate wifi hotspot, you can tell which network belongs to you or not but not to the average user because they aren’t visible and it’s very easy to setup wifi hotspots. You and I can do it. There are no alerts and sadly, often the people who work at these hotspots aren’t knowledgeable enough to warn you either. The person sitting next to you whom you think is doing work online could be operating an evil twin, or they could be one of those duped by one.

What do you do?
In an ideal world, don’t connect to wifi hotspots networks or don’t get on a public wifi at all. If you absolutely must get an Internet fix, don’t conduct online transactions like buying stuff, logging into your online bank or any place you’d be asked for sensitive information.

Next, disable all kinds of file or print sharing. If using WindowsXP operating system, go to Start, Control Panel and then Network Connections. Right click on the Internet connection or the Network connection and select Properties. In the General tab, locate and uncheck File and Printer Sharing. Click apply.

If you set up your notebook computer to connect automatically whenever a network is found, you’d want to disable that or change it to manual connection.

Make sure your firewall is turned on and any antivirus software is up to date.

As a good practice, if you have any sensitive files or information on your computer, consider putting them into one or several dedicated folders and then securing those folders by making them private. In WindowsXP, select the folder in question, right click on it and select properties. In the sharing tab, locate and check “Make this folder private”.

These suggestions aren’t fool proof but can help put stumbling blocks in an offender’s path. The best protection is still being knowlegeable about wifi hotspots networks and not to connect to a suspicious network. And if you’re in doubt, don’t connect at all.

Sidenote: Similarly, if your neighbour offers their wifi network for you to use, make sure this is someone whom you trust.

The History of Dolby Audio

Computers 2 Comments »

These days, Dolby is a household name. The infamous “DD” symbol can be found on almost every piece of modern audio equipment out there. This includes gaming consoles, HDTVs, home theaters, both home and car stereos, cinemas, and personal computers.

It all started in 1949 when a man named Ray Dolby went to work for Ampex Corporation part-time while still in high school. He worked on an assortment of ventures in correlation with audio instrumentation. He continued to work for Ampex while attending college at Stanford University. During this period, he branched off to unite with a small team of Ampex engineers who were determined to invent the world’s first video tape recorder. Dolby centered in on the electronic aspects of the project. The team succeeded with their introduction of this new technology in 1956. Ampex then sold its first video tape recorder for $50,000.

Dolby graduated from Stanford in 1957 and was awarded the Marshall Fellowship at Cambridge University, England. He studied at Cambridge for 6 years, earning a Ph.D. in physics. In 1965, Ray Dolby started his own company, Dolby Laboratories, Inc. His first product from this new and innovative company was identified as Dolby A-type Enoise reduction. It significantly reduced the amount of background noise or hissing sounds found in professional tape recording without jeopardizing the original content of the material being recorded. This was the beginning of the many advances Dolby would make in the complex world of audio compression and expansion.

Ray Dolby developed an ingenious method of noise reduction by separating soft signals from loud ones, then simply not processing those loud signals. He then split up the spectrum into several bands to avoid clashing or pumping, therefore generating white noise. This method would become integrated in numerous aspects of society’s rapidly growing fascination with electronic entertainment. Early on, consumers weren’t satisfied with the ‘flat’ mono sound ordinary radios and cassette players emitted. Everyone wanted to hear music in stereo.

This new sound also found its way into movie theaters. Dolby sound made its debut in the original recording of Star Wars, and continues to revolutionize the audience’s experience even today. The sound is both more spectacular and more natural at the same time. Because of this technology, even video games are more realistic; the sounds are more powerful as they are not only heard, but also felt. The sound is so tangible it is as if fantasy has in fact become reality. More people are staying home instead of going to movie theaters since Dolby surround sound was introduced into the home theater system.

Recent advancements include Dolby 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and 9.1 (that’s right, nine full-range channels), Dolby Digital Surround EX, Dolby SR, Dolby TrueHD, and countless others. It is obvious that Dolby is the reigning “King of Sound” and most likely will be for generations to come.

Choosing A Career In The Video Gaming Industry

Computers No Comments »

If you really enjoy playing video games and you find them a challenging form of entertainment why not consider a career in the video gaming industry. If you are going to be working at something for 40 years or so don’t you think it sounds like a good idea to choose something you enjoy doing?

There are plenty of opportunities out there in the gaming market, it is a truly huge industry with a turnover of billions of dollars worldwide. There are lots of different aspects to the industry so most people with an interest in video games should be able to find something to suit them.

Working as a video game programmer can be a challenging but well paid job. To be successful in this area you would require some form of training, most likely a degree in programming. This may not be an easy career to pursue but if you have the ability then you should always be able to find work.

Another job in the industry which may be of interest is that of a video game animator. To do well here you will need skills in design and you will also have to be creative. Imagine the buzz from seeing a piece of work you created being included in a video game which sells worldwide.

The audio aspect of game design is often overlooked but there are plenty of opportunities for sound effect and background music composers. In order to do well here a good knowledge of digital music is essential and having some game playing time under your belt is going to help as well.

Once video games have been designed the software developers need to have them tested. Video game testers fall into two categories. The developers do hire testers to play the games in house, if you were interested in this role you would need some programming skills. Also the developers use average game players to test there new titles, no special skills of qualifications are required. This can be a really good way to start out in the industry, they send you the games to test in the post along with what they want you to look at and report on. You send your report back to them, you get paid for your time and get to keep the game!

Building up experience in this way is useful if you would like to work for a major software house, you can do it at home in your spare time and once you become established you can do it full time. All you need to do is find out the right people to contact and how to get in touch with them, other than that becoming a video game tester is quite straightforward.

What Exactly is an Intel Centrino Mobile Notebook?

Computers No Comments »

There has been a lot of confusion over the use of the term Intel Centrino and what it actually means. An Intel Centrino mobile notebook is actually a combination of Intel products, including what is marked as the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor, put together to create a wireless networking, high performance Intel Centrino mobile notebook.

When wireless networking became popular, Intel introduced the Intel Centrino mobile notebook concept to make it easier for people to get a wireless networking computer. Instead of fishing around for the right parts and the like, Intel effectively made a package that would give them these things they were looking for. The specifications for an Intel Centrino Mobile Notebook cover an Intel chipset, a Pentium M Processor (often referred to as an Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor) and Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection. In fact, any Intel Centrino Mobile Notebook is basically an all Intel machine. Practically all of the internal parts will be Intel parts.

The Intel Centrino Mobile Laptop processor is an Intel Pentium M Processor. Confusion between the Pentium M processor and Centrino is common, but the Pentium M is part of the Centrino package. This processor is a variant on the Pentium processors from their desktop range, but with lots of different technologies and additions, making them quite different from the desktop versions. There are a number of Intel Centrino mobile laptop processors offered with the Sonoma revision of Intel Centrino mobile laptop technology. Intel Pentium M processors 780, 770, 760, 750, 740 and 730. They also offer Low voltage models in the 778 and 758 as well as two Ultra Low voltage models, the 753 and 733J. All of the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processors use 90nm manufacturing process, 2MB of L2 cache and various other technologies, including the Execute Disable Bit with the models that have a J at the end.

The Intel Centrino mobile laptop processors have some specific benefits which make them suitable for the mobile environment. One of the most obvious of the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor is the low volatage design. Low voltages allow Intel Centrino mobile notebooks to have lower power consumption, lengthening running time. As well as this there is technology to raise of drop the voltage of an Intel Centrino mobile notebook as necessary, further saving power.

Intel Centrino mobile notebooks also come with the Mobile Intel 915 Express Chipset. This chipset specifically designed for Intel Centrino mobile notebooks provides many new features that the older Intel Centrino mobile notebooks did not offer. Some of the most notable are the addition of SATA, PCI Express X16 for graphics, PCIe for the other cards internally and DDR2 400/533MHz. It is desgined specifically with the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor in mind.

For Intel Centrino mobile laptops SATA provides an increase in the performance of hard drives and DVD drives. This technology allows for faster transfer of information which speeds up all applications. PCI Express X16 is a breath of fresh air for those who are looking to get better graphics from their system and in particular, those who would like to play 3D games, which using the more recent Intel Centrino mobile notebooks has become more feasible. The internal PCI Express should also allow for speed increases for parts, and helps to pass more strain away from the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor.

Most beneficial for the Intel Centrino mobile laptop is the addition of DDR2 400/533MHz memory. DDR2 not only offers speed increases over the older DDR, but most importantly for mobile technology is that it consumes less power, just like the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor. Power saving is an everpresent concern for laptop users who have to work with limited battery life.

Intel Centrino mobile notebooks also include technology for wireless networking. Although this is nothing new, the technology has been improved and updated, supporting the latest technologies. There is much increased security from the newer Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG and 2200BG which increase security, have higher performance, better ease-of-use and better power management, allowing power saving. In short it is a fully featured card that gives everything you could need. It is specifically aimed at meeting the stringent needs of the business user who chooses an Intel Centrino mobile notebook.

The benefits of the Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor and Intel Centrino mobile laptop technology are clear and although you can get the same things from other combinations of parts there is a certain comfort in the combination. It allows you to be fairly certain of what to expect from your laptop and how much it will perform. Intel Centrino mobile notebooks have been around for a while now and on the whole there is a good reason they are so popular. The Intel Centrino mobile laptop processor in an Intel Centrino mobile laptop has become almost synonymous with mobile networking for laptops.

Choosing The Right Notebook Computer

Computers No Comments »

Notebook computers have incresed in popularity over the last few years. This buldging market for notebook computers gives you more choice than ever before. The flipside is that the wide range makes it that much more difficult to choose the right notebook computer without a little knowledge.

The most important questions is always: What will I use my notebook computer for?

This driving question should lead all purchases. No amount of techno-babble should make you get something that you just don’t need. Stay informed and you will get the best results from you notebook computer.

Notebook computers are, by nature, designed to be moved around easily. More than likely you will use it for work, this is the place where the most commuting takes place and the place you will most likely transport your computer to during the day.

Smaller notebook computers are never quite as fast as their slightly bigger counterparts. The small sizes don’t allow for the latest and fastest parts that need a lot of breathing room as they can become very hot. Lot’s of time away from a power source necessitates getting a good battery and having a computer than uses the battery efficiently. In the digital age, the internet is very important for many people, so wireless connectivity is essential. Applications on a notebook computer will probably consist of software like the Microsoft Office Suite or similar and a few other programs. Small monitors and limited processing power will rule out most serious gaming, but for a notebook computer it is hardly necessary considering what it is intended for. Fancy graphics cards are an option, but are hardly worth it as everything else plays against it, except if you get a huge, powerful laptop computer, which is very cumbersome. Let’s look at these in a little more detail.

Consider carefully the size of notebook computer that you need. There are a lot of different sizes with notebook computers. Browsing around your local computer store will give you a much clearer picture of the sizes, even if you buy online, checking a real one out first is highly recommended. The size is pretty much dictated by the screen size, with sizes running past 15 inches in some cases. A notebook computer with a smaller screen makes it more portable. An option for a smaller notebook comptuer is a wider screen. WXGA and other wide screen formats give a little extra width, allowing a much more roomy desktop. They are usually in a 16:9 width to height ratio, while 4:3 is the desktop standard. This extra width is perfect as it allows you to keep two programs open side-by-side without closing them all the time.

The processor is the next major consideration when choosing your notebook computer. In a general sense they are usually toned down version of their desktop counterparts. They are clocked lower, meaning they run slower than intended, but the upside is much reduced power consumption which is good for battery life. Any processor should have enough clout for office type software. AMD and Intel are the major names for notebook computer processors, although Intel has the lion’s share of the mobile computing market.

After these two major items, the other bits are really just extras. There is room to choose and pick with most of these other parts on your notebook computer.

Essential extras include USB ports, wireless networking capabilities, network port and modem port. USB is the standard for peripherals that connect to the notebook computer. Another one that is sometimes used for video and others is FireWire, it’s useful to have, but not essential. Wireless networking is becoming standard, but make sure. There should be a convenient way to turn off the wireless card as they suck a lot of battery power when in use and can be turned off when not in use. A network port is so standard that there must be one, modem ports are so common they should not be missing.

Your DVD might be external or built-in, if it’s external you could be choosy about which kind and brand you get, perhaps even a DVD writer. A DVD is not essential. If you notebook computer is a second computer and you have a main one at home, then you could forgo the DVD writer or the DVD drive altogether if you really need a compact notebook computer.

The mouse pad on the notebook should be easy to use and responsive. It should be out of the way enough not to interfere when typing. Keyboard layout needs to be good, even if it is smaller than standard.

Finally you might feel a little safer choosing a notebook computer from companies like Sony, Gateway, Dell, eMachines, Gateway, HP, Toshiba, Thinkpad, Acer or Fujitsu. They are all major notebook computer makers and will be able to back up their products with guarantees that they will deliver on.

Ps2 Still Alive

Computers No Comments »

It’s amazing, even though the next-generation consoles have already been released, there still seems to be a lot of life left in the PlayStation 2, at least in my opinion. Roughly three years after the first next-generation console was released, Xbox 360, I still feel like I have yet to play everything that I wanted to play for my PS2.

That’s a good thing. Since I still have interest in PS2 games, that also means that I can get them for dirt cheap prices. Something tells me that there are still a lot of people out there with just as much interest in their PS2 as I have with mine. How do I know this? Believe it or not, the PS2 still sells pretty well even to this day.

Rightly so. It has a ton of awesome games. These days, there are so many games being released (good ones too), that it almost feels like too many games are being released. Games I still want to play for my PS2 are: Metal Gear Solid 3, Devil May Cry 1, 2 and 3. Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, Silent Hill 3, and the list just goes on and on. Oh yeah, God Of War. So, there are a lot of games available for the console. You find software titles you have always wanted to play, or forgot you wanted to play. You will also find software titles that you didn’t even know of and probably really enjoy them.

Let’s face it, the next-generation consoles are expensive, and so are the games. This is a good opportunity though, because not only is the PS2 really cheap, but so are the games. This doesn’t even include the used games section. In my opinion, there’s never been a better time to be a gamer. I’ve purchased 3 software titles for my PS2 for fifteen dollars. Yes, only fifteen dollars! How much would a next-gen game cost? Fifty dollars or more! Huge difference.

So, if you have a PS2, stop letting it collect dust because now you know there’s a lot more life inside of it. For those that are still on the fence of which video game console to buy, well, now you know. Get out there and buy a PS2, and for less than half the price of a next-gen console, I might add.

Where In The World Is Wii Fit?

Computers No Comments »

Does anyone remember that show, what was it called, “Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego”? I think there was something called that. Anyway, that title should be replaced with “Where In The World Is The Wii Fit”?

As far as I’m concerned, the fact that Nintendo’s Wii Fit is so incredibly hard to find, is an indication or shows that a shift or expansion of sorts is happening within this industry. The thing about Wii Fit is that you literally have to use your entire body to play the game.

Now, the crazy thing about this is that a couple of years ago, when Nintendo revealed their Wii console and gave a general indication of how games were going to be controlled, which was motion-based, it seemed that almost everyone was shocked with disbelief. Not in a positive light, but a negative light.

I can remember this almost as if it were yesterday. People were saying that Nintendo was dead. That they were going to go bankrupt. You name it, and someone probably said it. Fast forward a couple years later, and not only is Nintendo’s Wii a success, but so is their Wii Fit.

The Wii Fit though requires your entire body, whereas a regular Wii game would require some hand and arm movements. What does this tell me? That there is definitely a shift happening within the video game industry. More and more people want to move their bodies in some way or another while playing games.

I’m not saying their is anything wrong with playing games that doesn’t require any type of body movement. There isn’t. But look at the bigger picture. The fact that more and more people are using their bodies while playing these videogames sheds negative layers off of the gaming industries image. For some reason or another, this industry has been looked at in a negative light for far too long.

But that’s starting to change now, and Wii Fit is helping with that effort. People of all ages are using it. I’ve seen the news where gym trainers are actually incorporating Wii Fit’s into their training programs. This is a huge positive for the industry. So, where in the world is Wii Fit?

Yes, for people like me, who want the game real bad, it’s probably not a really good thing that it’s really hard to find one. But for the industry as a whole, the fact that Wii Fit is so hard to find is another sign that video games are on it’s way to being looked at as another legitimate form of entertainment.

Tips For Beating New Super Mario Brothers

Computers No Comments »

Before I begin, I do want to mention that there will be spoilers within this article. If you at all plan on getting New Super Mario Brothers in the future, you may want too refuse from continuing to read this article. If it’s not a problem for you, then of course that’s your decision. For those that do own the game and have beat the last boss but have yet to finish the game entirely, then these tips are just for you. With that being said, let’s get on with these tips.

Now, before I get into the meat of this article, I just want to mention that New Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo DS is a really fun game. I know that there may be some gamers that have a tendency to compare this Mario game with other Mario games of the past, but really, that’s beside the point. In my opinion, NSMB stands on its own and is well worth the price of admission. If you still don’t have the software title, do yourselves a favor and go grab yourself one. Now, onto the tips for NSMB for the Nintendo DS.

In all, NSMB consists of eight different worlds that can be beaten. The thing is that even though there are eight worlds in total, only six of those 8 worlds must be completed. You can actually finish this software title without completing world 4 and 7. The question then becomes, how do you even get to those worlds?

In actuality, it’s really not that difficult. The answer is you need to be tiny when facing off with the boss. I’m actually not talking about being small, but tiny. So in order to do this you have to utilize the small mushroom. So here’s what you do: Once you reach world 2, make sure you grab yourself a small mushroom which makes you tiny. Now comes the more difficult part. When you reach the boss of that world, you have to make sure that you beat him while you are tiny, making sure you do not die in the process. Once you accomplish this, you will have successfully unlocked world 4 in the game.

Take that same process you just used for world 2, and do the same thing for world 5. Once done, you will then have successfully unlocked world 7. That’s all there really is to it. Not sure where you were supposed to find those extra coins in NSMB? Well, now you have your answer. What’s left to do now? Fully completing this great game. Good luck!

Nintendo DS Lite Review

Computers No Comments »

This is a Nintendo DS review. Before I begin, it’s important to note that there are actually two different Nintendo DS’s. One being the original, and then of course the revision being the Nintendo DS Lite. Within this review, I will specifically be talking about the Lite version of the DS.

First off, the DS Lite is definitely smaller and lighter than it’s original version. It’s also very sleek and can easily fit in your pocket. So as soon as you open up the console, you’ll notice right away that it has two screens (hence the name DS “Dual Screen”). The screens are positioned in a vertical manner, with one screen located on the top of the console, and the other screen located at the bottom of the console.

You have two speakers located on each side of the top screen. The sound that comes out of these speakers is actually quite decent, but doesn’t compare to the quality of sound when using your headphones. Located in the middle of the system is the microphone. Then at the bottom, we have your standard D-Pad, X, Y, B, A, Start and Select buttons.

Located on the very top of the system, you have a slot for your DS games, port for your charger (this is to re-charge the built-in battery), and your R and L buttons. Located at the very bottom is a slot for your Game Boy Advance games, a volume slider, and a headphone jack. On the side, you have your power button, and a slot for the stylus.

I have had my DS for a while now, and in terms of raw functionality, this system performs like a champ. I’ve dropped my DS several times (by accident of course), and it shows absolutely no signs of “giving up.” So, do I recommend this product? Considering that I have spent more time playing my DS then I have any other video game system, my answer is a resounding yes!
