USB Flash Disks: A modern day business curse?

On-site technical support is, as the majority of IT staff will happily tell you, a succession of running battles at the best of times, without the input of unwelcome surprises.

Yet, over the past few years, the market has seen an explosion in the number of USB flash memory sticks in people’s possession. Where once they were a nice gadget, a flashy accessory, they’ve increasingly become a day-to-day storage solution that a greater number of people are relying on.

Part of the reason for this explosion in ownership and use is cost. Even corner shops have been known to have a 1GB stick on sale, rarely costing more than a tenner or so. In fact, one British stationary chain was selling a five pack of 1Gb sticks for £20 this past weekend.

Then there’s the fact that modern computers universally accept them, in the vast majority of cases not even demanding a driver installation to do so. But the other factor is the sheer convenience of carrying everything round, be it pictures, work, large presentations or whatever, on something that laughs at the physical size of an optical disc.

San Francisco – The new version of the Firefox browser was downloaded over 8 million times in its first 24 hours of release in what organizers claimed was a world record. But the success was tempered by reports from a software security company that Firefox 3.0 contained a serious security flaw that potentially lets an attacker take over a PC if a user clicks on a booby-trapped link.

Stopping ID Theft With Biometrics

Consumers are pointing to themselves as the greatest threat to secure online financial services. A recent survey by global consulting firm Accenture reveals that 88 percent of respondents believe that personal irresponsibility is the top cause of identity theft. Further, nearly half of respondents admit to being careless with their online security by sharing or not properly disposing of personal information.

Consumers shun mobile payment

How a misconfigured laptop ruined a worker’s life

After pornography was discovered on his laptop, a state worker in Massachusetts got fired and had to deal with a smeared reputation and financial fallout. But it has been discovered that his laptop was riddled with malware because the security software wasn’t working. The worker was likely innocent, and criminal carges have been dropped.
