iFrames on Facebook: What you need to know

Facebook recently rolled out some major changes for Facebook Pages. If youíre managing any Facebook Pages you should already be aware of the changes, which were forcibly implemented on March 9 across the board.

One of the biggest announcements concerning the upgrade is that Facebook is deprecating FBML (Facebook Markup Language) and FBJS (Facebook Java Script) as a primary technology for building apps on Facebook. The Static FBML tab has been the industry standard for creating apps for Facebook for a while now and is extremely popular (112 829 378 Monthly Active Users). Before you get your knickers in a Farrimond friction hitch (thatís a knot. I Googled it), Facebook in a statement said that by March 11 ďyou will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app.

While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or the Static FBML app will continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible.Ē So by now you should have bulked up on how to use iFrames.

Facebook- FBML or iFrames?

Everybody is talking about the deadline on March 11 when Facebook will no longer allow users to add new FBML applications to their Facebook page. Lots of people see this as a good thing, (including me) as FBML has lots of quirks and any coder is doing back flips to be able to design real PHP pages and deliver content in a frame instead of having to thread it through all the FBML and strip out a lot of the functionality they could be offering on a typical web page.

On the other hand FBML does a few things that we canít do yet with iframed content on a web site. Sure, you can use the social plugins and some code to do a lot of it, but itís not all there yet. Besides, if youíre not a coder, or donít have one working for you, it can be a bit daunting to create a Facebook application and the code for the iframes yourself.
